Why Sparky?
Sparky Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system.
sparky Linux system requirements.
- Sparky Linux is available for 32-bit and 64-bit Intel and AMD processors Sparky Linux works on both BIOS and UEFI -based machines.
- CPU: i686 (32bit) or amd64 (64bit) Pentium 4, or AMD Athlon
- RAM memory:
- 128 MB –CLI Edition
- 256 MB –LXDE,LXQT,OPenbox 512 MB-xfc
- SWAP Partition:512 MB or larger
- Hard Drive or USB Flash Drive:
- 2 GB (CLI edition).
- 10 GB (“Home” editions)
- 20 GB (GameOver/Multimedia)
optical drive (CD/DVD) or USB port with USB Flash Drive.
If your machine has less than 1GB of RAM, please use Sparky Advanced Installer instead.

Special Editions:There are new iso images of Sparky 2023.03 The March update of Sparky Special Edition iso images features Linux kernel 6.1.15 of the 6.1 LTS line, and other updated packages from Debian and Sparky testing repos as of March 21, 2023.
Added to the Game Over spin: SC Controller + Heroic Games Launcher.
No re installation is required if you have Sparky rolling installed, simply keep it up to date.
History: The project was born on October 2011 as an Ubuntu remix with Enlightenment as the default desktop having the name ue17r (Ubuntu Enlightenment17 Remix). After a few months of testing, the base system was changed to Debian and it was renamed to Sparky Linux.
Sparky Linux Features: Sparky Linux is designed for experienced users and is not a good starting point for beginners. Some key features associated with Sparky Linux include the following:

Once your download is complete, you need to make your ISO file boot able. See our guide. You could also use other tools of your choice like balena Etcher or Ventoy. The guide also demonstrates how to do the installation on Oracle Virtual Box and VMware Workstation / Player.
Step 1: Log in to Proxmox Virtual Environment.
Log in to Proxmox Virtual Environment.

The opens the following interface.

The interface shows all my Virtual Machines in the Data center.
In this step, I will prepare my Virtual Environment for SparkyLinux installation. Navigate to the top right corner and click on Create VM.

This opens the interface below.

Fill in the VM details. My summary looks like this.

Once your summary makes you happy, click Finish. This will create your VM and it will be listed on the list of the VMs in your Virtual Environment as shown below.

Step : Power on your VM to install

To begin the process of installation, double-click on Sparky Installer.
This opens the following page.

Select your installation language and click Next.
Step : Select your location
The next thing is to select your Geographical Location in terms of Region and Zone. Select your appropriate location.

You can as well change the Locale settings to match your Location. When done click Next to proceed.
You will now choose your keyboard layout.

Choose your preferred keyboard layout and click Next.
Step : Make your partitions
If you are not an experienced user, you can select Erase disk. This option erases all the data currently present on the selected storage device. For experienced users, manually create your partitions by checking the Manual Partitioning. This gives you the freedom to define the sizes of your partitions.
For this guide, I will Erase my disk since it’s for test purposes.

You can choose to Encrypt your system if your disk will be holding crucial information, Only do not forget your password. Click Next to proceed.
Step : Create a System User.
In this step, define the system user by filling in the details of the username, the login name, the host name, and the user password as shown below.

Once satisfied, click Next to proceed. A summary of your Sparky Linux installation properties will be provided. Go through the summary and make the necessary tweaks if any.

Step : Begin the process of installation
Once you are content with the summary, Click Install to begin the process of installation.

Allow the installation to proceed and be patient as multiple files are downloaded during the installation process. Once installation completes successfully, you should see this page.

Click Done to finish the process of installation. You can then Restart your system. As the system restarts, the cool Sparky Linux logo is displayed.

Open box window manager is the default windows manager. There is a notification to update your system. Click Yes and provide the password supplied during installation.

Accept the upgrade by clicking OK.

This opens a shell terminal and upgrades your system.
Step : Launch Applications.
To launch the applications, navigate to the Menu icon located in the bottom left corner of the window and click on it.
